Many times, sequels usually end up disappointing their viewers. Sometimes the cast is different, or the plot is tweaked which leads to a seemingly completely different film. However, the latest Beetlejuice movie manages to stand out from the expected and create a nostalgic sequel that is familiar with its audience.
Directed by Tim Burton, the sequel follows Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) and the introduction of new characters. The new movie takes place 10 years after the original, following the Deetz family who are now entangled in the same eerie, but comedial world.
Lydia Deetz’s daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega) finds herself drawn to the same odd circumstances her mother also experienced. As she explores this new world, she accidentally discovers a portal to the afterlife and is stuck there. In an attempt to save her daughter, Lydia summons Beetlejuice who is still deeply obsessed with her and unwillingly signs a marriage contract in order for him to allow her to travel to the afterlife to save her daughter.
Burton’s signature and distinct visual style is once again portrayed with gothic and creative landscapes and playful special effects. The practical effects of the original film are now enhanced with CGI to portray a more realistic style. While some audiences might prefer the original distinct style of the first film, the new modern technology allows for a more tasteful experience of the intriguing world.
While the original Beetlejuice relied more on a humoristic narrative and out-of-world experiences, the new Beetlejuice movie has a more structured appeal and more character development to its storyline. The main characters who returned to the sequel, (Ryder, Keaton and Catherine O’ Hara) add a sense of familiarity that longtime fans will appreciate.
In the end, the new Beetlejuice is a solid sequel to the original film. It does not attempt to outdo the movie that all fans know and love, but instead it complements it by expanding on its storyline and exploring new themes that were not seen before. With strong performances, enhanced visuals and a unique mix of nostalgia and originality the sequel manages to stand alone and shine side by side with the previous film.
