For about 15 years, Mount Pisgah’s drumline has been at every home football game and every pep rally playing their different cadences, but few understand the dedication and time put into drumline.
Drumline directors Anisha Lewis and Kelly Pugh have dedicated hours of time and effort to coach a group of extremely talented individuals passionate about percussion and building a program set up for success.
“[The drumline] was started to give musicians another outlet to perform while supporting the community. It started out [as] just performing at football games and pep rallies, but now we play at signing days, senior nights and carpool lines,” says Lewis.
The drumline has brought together both middle and upper school students through their common interest in performing. However, for some, there is a deeper reason for being a member of the drumline.
Senior Harrison McGee states, “I joined drumline because I wanted to showcase my percussion talent, but I also wanted to see the excitement on people’s faces while I’m performing.”
Senior Jaedon Johnson explains that he joined drumline because he has always been interested in drums as a concert percussionist.
“Joining the drumline allowed me to explore my passion for rhythm in a dynamic, high-energy setting.”
The drumline is always all in for every occasion at Mount Pisgah and always supporting their peers. They build a unique community that embodies school spirit and camaraderie.
“The group is just really fun and supportive of each other. When one of our younger members sings the national anthem every year, and the drumline kids make sure that they are front and center to support her. These moments stand out as reasons why the drumline is so important to me. The bond and friendship that is cultivated is truly special,” says Lewis.
As Mount Pisgah continues to develop in coming years, Lewis sees the drumline continuing to grow in size, and for younger members to step up and become the leaders of the line in the coming years.
