There are only a few weeks left until the Toys for Tots Christmas drive kicks off at Mount Pisgah. The drive will start the week after Thanksgiving Break, running from Dec. 2 through Dec. 12.
The drive strives to raise funds in both toys and money for economically disadvantaged children across the United States.
With help from the National Honors Society (NHS), the campaign will collect new toys and sell baked goods to give out toys to thousands of kids in need this holiday season.
Toys for Tots began in 1947, created by Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks and his wife Diane. Hendricks and the Marines in his reserve unit in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys in their first campaign. In 1948, the commandant directed all Marine Reserve Sites to implement a Toys For Tots campaign transforming it into a national community action program.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation was established in 1991 at the behest of the Marine Corps to help run and support the Marine Toys for Tots Program.
Today, the foundation raises funds, purchases toys, provides promotional and support materials, manages all funds raised and donated, solicits corporate support, and educates the public.
Since 2016, Mount Pisgah has collaborated with Toys For Tots to raise funds and toys for the holiday season. The drive is directed by Lauren Coleman, who said she is “very excited to continue to help children in need with such a generous community.”
“Mount Pisgah averages between 700 to 1000 donations per year, sometimes even funding entire areas,” Coleman added.
After the drive concludes on Dec.13, there will be a coffee truck on campus for students and faculty to enjoy and there will be prizes awarded.
After Thanksgiving break remember to bring in a new, unwrapped toy and give to those in need.
