With finals season right around the corner, Mount Pisgah upper school students are beginning to study for the one week each semester everyone dreads.
With this stressful time for students, many struggle to find the best way to study.
When 50 students were asked what they believed to be the best way to study, the results varied.
83% of students claimed that using Quizlet, which is an online learning platform that allows students to learn terms and definitions through various methods like games, writing, and flashcards, as opposed to 17% of students that said paper flashcards were a more effective way of studying.
Many teachers love to host review games, like Kahoot or Gimkit, which encourage students to be fully engaged in their learning while competing for a prize that could be potential bonus points, candy or just bragging rights. 71% of students say that they would rather play Kahoot during class whereas 29% would rather play Gimkit.
Khan Academy is a great resource I have used throughout my high school career to help me with math and science. This free learning tool allows students to log in and choose from a wide range of topics they wish to learn or review through different ways such as videos, practice problems or articles.
Along with Khan Academy, I utilize IXL to help review for math at a foundation level.
Contrary to my beliefs, 75% of students said they use neither Khan Academy nor IXL to study.
Lastly, teachers are always telling students to refer back to their pre-made slideshows to study. However, only 14% of students find this to be effective when studying. The other 86% see value in having a paper study guide that they can go through. This is beneficial because they can see what topics are their strengths and weaknesses and create a study plan based on a sheet of paper given to them by their teacher.
My advice to those stressed about taking finals and do not know where to start when studying is this: relax and space out your studying in a way that works for you. Everyone’s brains are built differently, so someone else’s methods may not work for you.
