This semester, Adulting 101 was introduced as a new elective class at Mount Pisgah. This semester-long class taught by Ms. Weller teaches students how to handle everyday situations that one faces during adulthood.
“It’s a class that’s aimed at providing both real life skills and critical thinking about life,” says Weller, “It includes soft skills like communication, our ability to present ourselves, emotional intelligence, as well as very practical skills that we can use in the future.”
These skills include everything from public speaking to car and house maintenance. Some units also include the basics of cleaning as well as greeting people.
“I’ve learned how to better my communication.” says sophomore Gabe Morgan. “Especially with presentations and public speaking, but also in interviews, as well as learning a lot about cleaning certain surfaces and how some cleaning products help but also cause damage to other surfaces.”
Not everyone has to take a class in order to be a successful adult though. Because of the age of technology, there are so many resources available at our fingertips.
“I think it’s good to have multiple resources when you are approaching an issue in life and if you have had firsthand experience, having practiced that skill, you’re gonna be better at handling it when it happens.” said Weller, “For example, if you get a flat tire on the side of the road and you have never had to call for emergency service help and you have never had to diagnose what’s wrong with your tire, the second that it happens to you and you’re flustered and you’re frustrated, because you will be, then you can handle it better.”
Adulting comes with many freedoms, but also a lot of responsibilities. Getting a job, owning a house, full ownership of a vehicle and maintenance are huge feats to take on.
Luckily, students now have the guidance to help better prepare the next generation to become the best adult version of themselves they can be and tackle any challenge that they are faced with in their adult lives.
