Feb. 14, 2025, the Lumineers released their newest album “Automatic,” this 11-track collection marks an evolution in the band’s sound, delving deep into personal reflection.
With everyone holding their breath for the album’s release, the question is whether this new record lives up to their past and what it says about where The Lumineers are headed next.
Senior Cole Munroe offered up his opinions on the album.
“My favorite song from the new album is ‘Same Old Song’ because it is more upbeat compared to the rest of the album. ‘Automatic’ is a good album, however, it doesn’t compare to the past albums they have released,” said Munroe.
“Same Old Song” serves as the album’s opener and delves into themes of nostalgia and the cynical nature of relationships. The recurring chorus singing, “same old song” underscores the repetitive nature of longing for deeper connections.
The Lumineers’ release of “Automatic” marks the group’s fifth studio album, and what some may see as an evolution in sound.
Senior Abby Hart offered up her opinions on the evolution.
“I would say this album has a similar vibe to their past albums, however, compared to past albums like ‘Brightside,’ ‘Automatic’ definitely has a more melancholy sound to it,” said Hart.
For instance, “So Long” lines read “Everybody’s famous for a while, so long, so long,” these lines offer a sense of melancholy closure. According to certain critic’s analysis “So Long” could be interpreted as the band saying goodbye to a certain musical style or image, and embracing a new direction.
Although opinions among listeners may vary, it is clear that with every record the Lumineers’ music becomes more personal and intimate.
“You’re All I Got,” explores these more intimate themes highlighting longing for passion and love. One of the lines read, “Livin’ for the love of yesterday… You’re all that I got,” these lines capture the personal desperation for love.
Once again I believe we can all agree that the Lumineers have married raw emotional songcraft with surprising musical sophistication.
