Most people have heard the claim that some jobs are at risk due to a new star worker – artificial intelligence.
Reports say 300 million jobs can be taken over by AI. Should we consider this when deciding on future career paths and college majors?
AI will encounter many challenges that will help keep jobs for human workers. A huge reason is the safety and protection of the business. Artificial intelligence is very sensitive and vulnerable to data breaches, hacking and cyber-attacks. A human worker does not come with the risk of being hacked.
Artificial intelligence will also come with various ethical concerns, involving a lack of transparency and accountability. AI makes decisions based on data but sometimes that data is unfair or biased.
For example, if a company uses AI to decide who gets a job interview, the system might unintentionally favor certain people over others. This makes artificial intelligence less trustworthy. A company probably will not trust AI with big decisions knowing mistakes are possible.
It is not up for debate whether artificial intelligence is a useful resource or not because it can be extremely useful. However, it is not a replacement for human intelligence.
Jobs that require creativity, human emotions, and problem-solving, like teachers, doctors and artists, are what AI will fail to replace.
While this may affect jobs there will always be people needed to oversee, fix problems and make decisions.
AI can be helpful, but it can’t replace everything. When thinking about future careers it is smart to consider the need it has for human skills.
