Homework has been a major part of school for many decades. While some say homework is beneficial to their learning abilities, others say it is unnecessary and causes more stress in their lives in and outside of school.
“I think that homework is a beneficial part of learning. It allows for extra time and practice with a topic students may struggle with,” said sophomore Anslee Peacock.
While some argue that homework is another way of developing critical skills like time management, along with responsibility and organization, many feel students spend enough time already in school and should be allowed to disconnect from their school life at home.
“I think that homework just for the sake of it is not very helpful. However, if it is done, gone over, and used to advance someone’s learning, then it can be beneficial to students overall learning and improvement throughout school.”, said Mr. Durrance
Overall, homework is a beneficial way for students to reinforce what they have learned in their classes and be provided with more practice. However, this is only beneficial if they are provided with help and time to go over their work with a teacher.
Homework should still have a good balance. It should be provided in a reasonable quantity and not just be given out as meaningless work. Students should have a balanced life between academics and their personal lives.
“There should be a balance between school life and home life,” said Peacock. “Students should not be overloaded with homework and should still be able to live their own lives separate from school without needing to be stressed out about finishing their homework before returning to school the next day, especially when students are involved in extracurricular activities.”
