In March, Mount Pisgah Athletics named Brad Watkins the head coach of Mount Pisgah’s football team.
Watkins comes to Mount Pisgah with an abundance of experience. Previously, he served as the offensive coordinator at Campbell High School. Before his time at Campbell, Watkins coached at Cedartown, helping the team reach the state semifinal and title games in back-to-back years.
Along with coaching high school, Watkins has held multiple positions in athletics at different universities such as Sacred Heart University, Nichols College, Wilmington College and Old Dominion University. At these institutions, he coached the defensive line, served as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, and held roles as Director of Football Operations and Special Teams and Run Game Coordinator, respectively.
Beginning his time at Mount Pisgah, Watkins is looking forward to getting to build relationships with the football players and helping them be their best when it comes to athletics. Which goes hand in hand with one of Mount Pisgah’s core values of relationships.
“We’re going to have relationships with everyone on campus. We’re going to treat each other right and treat the campus community with respect.”
Watkins aims to make football not just about the game, but also about personal growth and learning.
“I think the most important lesson [the players] can learn from high school football is how to deal with adversity and how to push through when things aren’t going their way, helping people to overcome obstacles in life.”
With huge wins over Walker and St. Francis last season, Watkins looks to build on that momentum and has high aspirations for the 2025 team.
“My first goal is to win the first game. Getting the season started with a win would be great momentum. I want the athletes to play physical and aggressive and progress not only as athletes but also as people off the field.”
Watkins seeks success this season, but aims to define it not just by wins and losses.
“We can measure success beyond wins and losses by obviously finishing the season with the amount of players we started with and having guys stay on the team and see the potential. I think another way we can do it is having people in the community talk about us. Talk about all the great things we are doing.”
