As the year comes to an end and seniors are getting ready to embark on their college journey, Mount Pisgah allows senior girls to paint their skirts the colors of their college.
However, this senior tradition has not always been present at Mount Pisgah. Around ten years ago, students from the Class of 2016 pitched their idea to the administration.
The skirts have become more elaborate and unique with each new graduating class.
“[At first] their designs were fairly simple, but it was about hanging out with friends one last time. Over the years, the designs have become much more elaborate,” said Upper School Principal Marie Woods.
Designs of the girls’ skirts have ranged from hand-painted school logos to iron-on patches. No matter the design or the school, each skirt is truly unique to the individual wearing it.
Participation in this tradition means more than adding vibrant colors to the everyday Mount Pisgah uniform. This tradition represents the tight-knit community within the senior class.
“For four years, [the students] had been wearing their skirts as part of their uniform, taken tests in their uniform, and passed all their courses in their uniform. This was an opportunity to now put their futures on their skirts, signaling a rite of passage from high school to college,” said College Counselor, Susan Reilly.
The Class of 2025’s girls are attending over 15 different schools in the fall. With this comes a few duplicate schools, but each skirt differs from the next in many ways.
