In the hallway of the middle school basement, there is an art piece with a much deeper meaning than meets the eye. This piece was created by the 7th and 8th grade art classes, along with their teacher, Mrs. Delgado, and is meant to bring awareness to mental health.
“The piece was inspired by a bible study I did during maternity about emotions, and last year when I did the board, I didn’t include anything spiritual in it. This time I wanted to incorporate Christianity, and show some bible verses that can help with mental health,” says Mrs Delgado.
The board is a culmination of both notes and Bible verses to help those struggling.
There is a table set up next to it with sticky notes and pens, using which students can write encouraging messages to their peers. Each note is handwritten and meant to encourage those struggling.
It also has a few extra elements, such as a tree with apples of notes, and a tapestry with the words “You are God’s Masterpiece” written on it.
“I wanted people to know that they are not alone and if they ever feel down or lost, there are words in the Bible that can help them through that,” says Delgado.
The significance of this piece lies in its meaning. Each person can interpret the art however suits them best. It encompasses a wide variety of mental disorders and problems, and no matter how you are struggling, it can apply to anyone.
Even for those doing well mentally, it’s a good reminder to take a step back and appreciate that fact.
The subjectivity of art opens this piece up to a wide audience, and all can find some sort of personal meaning and value in it.
“Working on this piece did change the way I think about mental health. Looking at it makes me feel at peace and I think it’s important for everyone to have happiness in their life,” said eighth-grader Clemente Suit.
