F1: The Movie isn’t just about cars going fast. It’s about passion, rivalry and the risks drivers face every second.
I honestly didn’t expect much going into this movie. Just a movie about F1 sounded like it might be boring. But I was very wrong. The races were intense, the shots were amazing, and the soundtrack was incredible. Some featured songs by popular artists were “Lose My Mind” by Doja CatToliver and “Just Keep Watching” by Tate McRae.
It’s the kind of movie that works best in a theater, with the engines, amazing visuals and sound that make you feel like you’re part of the action.
The plot of the movie was centered on Sonny Hayes, a retired Formula One driver who was in a career-ending crash at the Spanish Grand Prix. After winning the 24 Hours Daytona race, Hayes is approached by his former F1 teammate and owner of the struggling APXGP F1 team, Rubén Cervantes, who asks him to be their second driver.
APXGP F1 team’s first driver, Joshua Pearce and Hayes have a bitter rivalry throughout the movie, each trying to be better than the other. It takes a turn when Pearce is in a serious crash and he blames Hayes for it.
Both very arrogant drivers with completely different styles of driving on the same team but it really added depth to the story.
The acting is also strong. The cast makes the story feel real, and the rivalry between Sonny and Joshua is especially convincing. Their friendship adds even more to the story, making the journey that much more engaging. I’d say the acting is one of the best things about the movie.
Although there are many great parts and scenes, there are some flaws to the movie. The movie was slightly unrealistic. Like the way Hayes drove and how he had so many collisions would never happen in F1, and the poker game that decided who would be lead driver wasn’t really necessary but it did allow Hayes and Pearce to grow closer.
Many F1 fans would recognize that this move leaned more into drama, action shots and cool scenes more than realism and accuracy to the real sport. Even so, it still pulls people into the sport and makes them want to get into it.
As F1 driver Charles Leclerc said, “It’s amazing for F1 because we are reaching people that we wouldn’t have reached without this movie.”
