Junior Grace Stearns, introduced Health Occupations of Atlanta (HOSA) at Mount Pisgah Christian School that will prepare students for careers in healthcare and medical leadership.
“I am trying to bring a community of future healthcare providers in our school and have a space to build our skills and learn more about the healthcare institution and create a community of service and learning,” said Stearns.
HOSA was originally founded in 1976 to serve as a student organization for those in health science programs to develop a rigor of leadership qualities and networking within the healthcare community.
“There are different state-led conferences that we can go to, especially one that we can go to next semester that is really big, and we are hoping to get into that. There is also one nationwide over the summer that members are allowed to attend to improve leadership, interact with peers we are unfamiliar with, and get insight on different things,” said co-vice president, Kiana Patel.
Students are exposed to diverse health professions and hands-on activities that are not different from a classroom environment.
“I learned about HOSA from my friend who goes to Chattahoochee, and she loves it and wants to be in the medical field in the future, and since we did not have it, I thought it would be such an awesome idea to have it here,” said Stearns.
This new organization allows for students to gain connections with professionals in the field and participate in decision makings in the meetings.
“I am most excited for the competitions and interacting with other schools to show off our skills, and it is a great opportunity to teach more people about medicare,” mentioned co-vice president, Gabe Medebem.
This club will inspire students who are already interested in the medical field to further progress their knowledge in healthcare and also introduce the world of medicine to the students who are unfamiliar with the program.
“I hope this new organization will give students an experience of what it is like to actually work in the healthcare field and to learn how they can benefit in the future because we are the future of the healthcare field,” stated Patel.
HOSA is accepting new members. If you want to join, reach out to Stearns, Patel or Medebem.
