As the excitement of a new school year begins to fade and the everyday routines begin to settle in, the pressure of academics, extracurricular activities and future college decisions arises for many students.
“When should I start?” Many students think college counseling is a problem to deal with during senior year; however, it is better to start considering it when the time feels right.
“The longer a student gives themselves to navigate the college search, the more valuable and successful it will be,” said Upper School College Counselor Andy Morrison. “Officially, at this point, we start meeting with students in the spring of the junior year. I would certainly love to move that earlier in the future, if possible.”
In the first two years of high school, students should focus on building strong academics and exploring various activities. When it comes to juniors and seniors, the process becomes more detailed, involving college lists, applications, and supplemental essays.
The process can be overwhelming, stressful, and confusing, but that’s what they are here for. You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself because they are here to support and help you. They will address your uncertainty and consider your thoughts to search for the best plan. College counseling is more than just applying to schools, but it helps students to explore their full potential.
“I have a lot of experience on the college side and have been in college admissions for more than 20 years. I support students through their college search, and that can look different for different students,” said Morrison.
They not only meet with students individually, but they also help organize college visits on campus, bringing representatives from a wide range of colleges and universities.
“These visits help me to learn more about college better, and to ask many personal questions,” said senior Ella English.
For many students, this college visit is their first exposure to college options, and it can help them expand their perspective as well as the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions.
Overall, students should take a chance to meet with our counselors, they will provide essential support and guidance along your high school career.
