The wrestling team has proven to be one of the hardest working teams at Mount Pisgah. A team that wouldn’t exist without the hard work and dedication of Coach Merry to the program, starting the year with morning practices at 6 AM. On January 10, the Mount Pisgah wrestling team won area duels, beating Fellowship, Mount Vernon, and Holy Innocence.

Last year, the team came in 2nd place at the area tournament, showing progress for the team. The team has undergone minor changes over the last two years, losing 1 senior last year. Currently there are no seniors on the team, so juniors have stepped up to become leaders.

The team went on to compete in the state duels tournament where they place 4th with a loss to Trion and a loss to Holy Innocence. Coach Merry felt “disappointed” with the loss.

This wasn’t the end for all the members of  the team, as 6 of them continued to go 6 for 6 in the Darlington Classic with all wrestlers entered winning. CG Bertrand was named the Most Outstanding Lightweight of the tournament.

“Our pipe-line is very strong coming up from the middle school which has achieved the same accomplishments at the middle school level as these current juniors, and [are] ready to fill someone’s shoes,” said Merry. The team may be older, but clearly that Merry doesn’t see that as a problem.

Select members of the team will continue on to the Individual State Tournament in Macon, Georgia from February 13th to 15th, where they hope to bring back a ring. Last year, David Bertrand was state champion, he hopes to make a successful trip and make it back-to-back wins.
