The making of sourdough bread has been an internet wide craze for many years and has flourished into a hobby and even a lifestyle for many people.
“I love working with sourdough. I began my own sourdough starter (the base for sourdough) over three years ago. I started making sourdough because it seemed like a fun summer project,” said Ali Weller.
Sourdough is a bread that differs from traditional wheat bread because it is made using a starter that must be kept up and fed between baking. Healthy sourdough starters bubble and rise throughout the day and almost have an “alive” quality to it. These have to be fed daily which involves discarding some of the starter, then mixing in more flour and water.
“I feel like my starter is part of my family since I have to take care of it so often – daily feedings, discards, etc,” said Jim Stewart. “My starter even has a name….Doughbacca. “
Sourdough fanatics have even moved on from the regular mundane sourdough toward fun and creative ideas for the bread. Some put flavors in their bread and others have started to paint their bread before cooking with fun animals and flowers.
“My favorite sourdough is a chocolate pecan sourdough that I make fairly often, and I also love a classic sourdough loaf,” Weller adds.
I for one love this craze, watching the videos of people making it are not only fun but therapeutic. My favorite part is how Taylor Swift has even joined in with the craze.
From baking bread in her music video to bread puns of her songs, she has jumped on the “breadwagon”. The puns even range from mimicking some of her song titles: “the fate of Doughphilia” and “Loafing him was bread”.
But is this just a trend? Will we look back on this and think about how cringey we were? Maybe, but in the end, trends can bring new and interesting experiences into your life.
So, if you are feeling creative, make sourdough!
