As school stress keeps increasing, more students are starting to wonder if mental health days should be allowed. Between schoolwork, sports, jobs and social pressure, many students feel overwhelmed and burned out. Because of this, people are debating if mental health should be a real reason to miss school.
A mental health day is basically a day off to relax and reset. Some students think these days could help them deal with stress before it gets too serious.
One reason mental health days could help is because they prevent bigger problems like burnout and anxiety. Taking a short break can help students come back more focused and do better in school.
“It would feel like a great reset for everyone to take a break from stress,” said sophomore Tyler Webb.
On the other hand, some people think mental health days could hurt students academically. Missing class can make it harder to keep up with assignments and lessons.
“If students take too many days off, they could fall behind and have trouble catching up,” said senior Christian Lange.
Even though mental health days can help, they might cause problems if students use them too much.
Another concern is that some students might take advantage of these days just to skip school. Because of that, some people think schools should set rules, like limiting how many days students can take and making sure they complete any missed work.
At the same time, schools would need rules to make sure these days aren’t abused. Limiting the number of days and requiring makeup work would help students stay on track.
“Schools should allow mental health days but also there needs to be some limits so we don’t fall behind or some people may take advantage of it,” said junior Jack Sanders.
Even with these concerns, a lot of students still support mental health days.
“Mental health days are a big benefit because they give students time to step back and reset,” said senior Christian Lange. “It could also build more trust between students and teachers, because students would feel like teachers actually understand what they’re going through. When schools show they care about mental health, students might be more honest instead of feeling like they have to hide how they feel.”
Overall, mental health days could be helpful for students, but only if there are clear rules. If schools find the right balance, these days could help students stay healthier and do better in school.
