Toys for Tots is an annual program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve that receives and distributes new, unwrapped toys to economically disadvantaged children during the Christmas season.
Lauren Coleman has been leading this program for Mount Pisgah for eight years.
“Our donations are distributed to the greater Atlanta community depending on which site is in most need. Each year MPCS donates on average 1000 toys to make someone’s Christmas that would otherwise not have the resources,” said Coleman.
It is an Upper School student body effort to provide toys for the drive and baked goods for the daily bake sale. Upper School students cookies, brownies, or other baked goods that will be for sale each day of the toy drive during both middle and upper school lunch periods. All proceeds go to support the mission of the Toys for Tots that will begin Dec. 1 and run through Dec. 11.
“My experience in participating in Toys for Tots has been really good. If you find the activities that you enjoy doing, for example, baking, or if you prefer interacting with people, then selling the baked goods makes it even more fun,” said senior Maddy Zeitlen.
Each grade competes to donate the most amount of toys and a prize is awarded to the winning grade.
“I have enjoyed seeing everybody who wants to donate,” said sophomore Ellie Lottes, “When we sell the cookies, it is fun seeing the grades battle for how much they can give to those in need.”
All students should consider donating as it makes a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate, and reminds us that this season is about giving back and supporting others.
“Every little bit helps. Whether you are able to participate through the donation of toys or purchasing baked goods, all proceeds go to help those in need,” said Coleman.
