This past month, junior Harley Cameron and sophomore Reagan Andreen had the opportunity to participate in the Alpharetta Greenway Mural Project. Their designs were selected to be portrayed along the Greenway to help bring the trail to life.
This project was sponsored by Alpharetta Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Alpharetta and the theme chosen for this year was “Clean Water For All”. The theme was chosen to honor Fulton County Public Works’ contribution to helping provide fresh water for everyone.
Out of 38 art submissions by high school students, 14 were chosen to be featured in the Alpharetta Greenway.
“Harley and Reagan submitted their design in September, and their proposal was selected as one of the winners for Phase 3 of the project,” said Anisha Lewis, Director of Fine Arts. “They spent about three days, around 15 hours total, bringing their design to life along the Greenway. The weather didn’t make it easy since it rained part of the time, but they pushed through and created something really beautiful that connects art, community and environmental awareness.”
Each student was assigned an art concept and was supervised by a professional muralist to help
them bring their designs to life. They also attended a design workshop to help them with the challenges of painting a cylindrical, concrete structure in nature.
Cameron’s work included vibrant colors to resemble to beauty of nature to show the importance of the water that sustains it.
“I painted a pretty sunset with a lot of colors and a large ocean at the bottom using various blues. Each side had a turtle with flowers to bring some different designs and animals into the mural,” said Cameron.
Andreen incorporated lily pads, flowers and bubbles in her design to resemble clean water.
“For my color palette, I began with bright and vibrant colors on the first layer. On top of that layer, I added cooler and darker colors to contrast the background,” said Andreen.
